‘Bulls–t’ that AJ Hinch is tainted from Astros scandal

In the wake of the illegal sign-stealing program that helped them win the World Series, the Astros drew the ire of many in MLB and its fans.

Except for one notable star.

Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera, whose manager is now former Astros boss AJ Hinch, is seemingly among the minority in the game that was not angered by the scandal, pushing back on the narrative that Houston’s title was tainted as a result.

“That’s bulls–t,” Cabrera told ESPN. “I don’t care about that.”

The scandal cost Hinch his job, as he was suspended by MLB for the 2020 season before landing on his feet with the Tigers. He has since had to answer for his role in the Astros’ scheme, which included using technology to steal signs and banging trash cans to alert batters what pitch was coming.

As more details of the program came out last year, some players on other teams emphasized the potential advantage of knowing what a pitcher was about to throw. That included Yankees slugger Giancarlo Stanton, who said he “probably would have hit 80-plus home runs” in 2017 had he known what pitch was coming.

But Cabrera, the 37-year-old future Hall of Famer, shrugged off that idea.

“In the end … it’s baseball,” Cabrera said. “[Try to] go ahead and do it like those guys did.”

Cabrera also appears to have no hard feelings regarding Hinch, who is now tasked with taking over another rebuilding club after leading the Astros from the basement to a title.

“He’s a really smart guy, a passionate guy,” Cabrera said. “He’s an honest man, a very special man. He knows a lot about baseball. He has great communication with us. I don’t care what they did in Houston. He [was] a big part of the success Houston had the last three to five years.”
