Former NBA guard Delonte West was arrested on Tuesday night after an incident involving officers at the Boynton Beach Police Department in Florida, according to WPTV’s Scott Sutton.

West, who played in the NBA from 2004-2012, was reportedly banging on the glass doors of the police department building and screaming profanities around 9 p.m. ET, per a case report obtained by Sutton. The report stated that West “smelled of alcohol and his speech was slowed and slurred.”

The 38-year-old faces charges of resisting an officer without violence, disorderly intoxication and having an open container. He was released on bail Wednesday morning.

What happened to Delonte West?

West was yelling obscenities while holding an open can of beer and open bottle of vodka, per the case report. Officers approached West, and when he started to walk away, they asked him to stop.

After reportedly complying with an order to place his containers on the ground, West then moved his hands toward the waistband of his pants. An officer pulled out a Taser, and West followed orders, dropping to his knees with his hands in the air.

As he was being placed in a police car, West “continued to be belligerent and screaming profanities and obscure rants,” according to the case report.

Delonte West’s legal troubles, mental health issues

West has dealt with mental health issues throughout his life. He told The Washington Post’s Rick Maese in 2015 that he “began cutting himself and swallowing pills” as a child and made several trips to children’s hospitals. West was first diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2008, and he underwent counseling and took medication to treat his condition.

In 2009, he was arrested in Maryland after officers pulled him over and found that he was carrying multiple loaded guns. West pleaded guilty to multiple charges and was sentenced to home detention, unsupervised probation and community service.

Family, friends and fans of West have grown concerned about his mental health since he last played in the NBA during the 2011-12 season with the Mavericks. In recent years, photos and videos surfaced showing West wandering around Houston without shoes on, ranting incoherently after getting into a street fight in Maryland and panhandling at a Dallas intersection.

In September 2020, Mavs owner Mark Cuban picked up West at a Dallas-area gas station and helped place him in a rehabilitation center. In October 2020, Cuban offered an update on West’s progress, saying that he had “taken the first steps” in his recovery.

In January, ESPN reported that West was working at the rehabilitation center in Florida in which had had been treated.
